Your Ultimate Guide to Malibu: Discover the Best of "The 'Bu"

Travel 2024-06-20

Ah, Malibu. With sweeping views of the Pacific ocean, its rolling hills and shores house the rich and famous. Millions flock to Malibu each year to enjoy the scenery, culture, and wonderful Mediterranean climate.

When you arrive, however, you might look around and wonder what there is to do. Much of Malibu is hidden behind private beach homes and secluded estates. As an LA native, I've uncovered plenty of exciting activities to help you experience the luxurious lifestyle of living in "the 'Bu".

Where to go in Malibu for a day trip.

Things to Do In Malibu

Drive the Pacific Coast Highway

Often called the most scenic highway in the United States — if not the world — the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) is a must-see. Running along the coast, this highway offers breathtaking ocean views and is locally referred to as “the 1” or simply “PCH.”

Stretching from San Diego to Mendocino County, PCH covers 650 miles. If you visit Malibu, you'll undoubtedly find yourself on PCH, enjoying the stunning ocean views along the shore.

Take a Wine Tour

Wine lovers, rejoice! Malibu offers several notable stops for wine tasting. You can explore them on your own or book a tour with Grape Adventures. I highly recommend their tour, as our guide, Julie, shared fascinating Malibu history along the way.

Start at Rosenthal Winery’s tasting room right on PCH, where you can enjoy ocean views while sipping wine. They have food trucks on Saturdays and Sundays.

Next, visit my favorite, Cielo Farms, located in Malibu Canyon. This vineyard offers luxurious wine tastings with breathtaking views. Be sure to book ahead.

Further down the canyon, you’ll find Cornell Wine Co., a large tasting room in a rustic setting. Pair your wine with a steak from The Old Place next door, and enjoy your meal on their shared outdoor patio.

Historic homes to see in Malibu

Visit the Adamson House

Designated on the National Register of Historic Places, the Adamson House, built in 1929, is known as the “Taj Mahal of Tile” due to its extensive decorative ceramic tiles from Malibu Potteries. This beautiful example of California Moorish-Spanish architecture is a must-see.

The grounds are open to visitors seven days a week from 8 AM to sunset, though it's a good idea to check their website for any changes.

Shop in Malibu Village

Malibu Village has grown significantly and is now bustling with charming boutiques, fashionable retailers, and delicious eateries. It's the perfect spot for lunch and shopping.

Visit the Self Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine

Malibu is known for its spiritual vibe, and the Lake Shrine in Malibu Canyon offers a peaceful retreat. Dedicated in 1950 by Paramahansa Yogananda, an Indian-American Hindu monk, yogi, and guru, this lakeside meditation garden with shrines and waterfalls is open to all.

Go Horseback Riding in the Canyon

While Malibu is famous for its beaches and surfing, its canyons are equally captivating. Explore this side of Malibu with Malibu Riders, and enjoy a horseback ride through Paramount Ranch, where parts of "Westworld" were filmed.

Best restaurants to eat at in Malibu

Have Lunch on the Malibu Pier

Smaller and more tranquil than the Santa Monica Pier, Malibu Pier is perfect for a leisurely stroll with ocean views. Afterward, grab a bite at Malibu Farm, which offers both a restaurant and a café.

Enjoy Fine Dining

Malibu boasts some exceptional dining options:

  • Geoffrey’s: This renowned restaurant offers California-style international cuisine in a Mediterranean setting with ocean views.
  • Nobu: A favorite among Southern California celebrities, Nobu is famous for its exquisite Japanese dishes. Make sure to book well in advance, as it’s notoriously difficult to get a table.
  • Mastro’s Ocean Club: Located in a stunning oceanfront setting, Mastro’s features the best of Californian surf and turf.

Hike Point Dume

Point Dume, despite its ominous name, is a popular destination for a short hike. This long bluff juts out over the Pacific Ocean, offering views all the way to the Palos Verdes Peninsula and Catalina Island.

Visit the Beautiful Beaches

To the northwest of Point Dume lies Zuma Beach, one of the largest and most popular beaches in Los Angeles. With wide sands and great surf, it’s a perfect spot for beachgoers. Paradise Cove is also popular
